This is a mechanical timber harvester (John Deere 643K Feller Buncher) allowing a person to cut down the tree, and then left it and place it on, for example, a timber truck.
This autonomous tractor can run up and down the rows of your orchard on its own, without a driver. You just program it to have it do your mowing or spraying or whatever.
The S670 Combine is a massive tool, costing about $510,000 in 2013. It can suck up grain from the field and separate the grain from the rest of the plant, and unload 3.3 bushels per second. The Goodyear Tires are nearly two meters in diameter.
Herbert (1874-1964) and Lou Hoover (1874-1944) are buried here in West Branch, Iowa. Hoover was our 31st President, and he and his wife were the first presidential couple to invite an African-American guest (Mrs. Oscar DePriest) to a White House social function. (People like Frederick Douglass and Booker T. Washington had been invited to the White House before, but not for social functions.
The Herbert Hoover presidential museum is at his birthplace in West Branch, Iowa. His parents died when he was young, and he moved to Newberg, Oregon to grow up. As a geologist in China, he evidently picked up some Mandarin Chinese.
Hoover’s role in averting mass starvation and famine in Belgium during World War I and its aftermath won him the undying gratitude of many Belgians.
Albert and Frank Shaw built this giant sculpture of Pocahontas following the designs of Albert Josiah Shaw. She stands in Pocahontas, Iowa. American folk art.
This barn in Iowa is one of many that have decorated a panel with a quilt-like motif. Rural areas help create a sense of identity and pride through forms of local art like this, and tourists and travellers can enjoy spotting the designs on old agricultural buildings like this barn.
This is the workshop in Grant Wood’s home in Cedar Rapids. I am fond of American regionalists such as Grant Wood and Thomas Hart Benton, and I was particularly happy to visit this place in Cedar Rapids where Grant Wood lived and worked.
The Grotto of the Redemption in West Bend, Iowa. This is a noted place to see in north central Iowa. Father Paul Dobberstein and Father Louis Greving built this massive shrine, sometimes hiring help from local people, and getting materials as donations from people around the world.
Paul Dobberstein nearly died at some point, and felt such gratitude for his recovery to health that he celebrated the power of Mary and Jesus to heal the world and save our souls.
In the evening this fountain splashes in a pond in front of the grotto.

This is a grand piano by Anton Martin Thÿm, of Vienna, built around 1815.
These brass instruments include a French trombone from 1800 and an upright cimbasso dating to about 1815. There are serpent heads rather than bell-shaped flares at the mouth of each instrument.
Spirit Mound is a prominent hill in eastern South Dakota near Vermillion. Lewis and Clark visited the hill in 1804. The hill was supposedly haunted by diminutive hostile spirits.
