Golden Mantled Ground Squirrel on a rock with spots of red lichen Least Chipmunk looking very alert Least chipmunk scratching itself
This very large and rather fat golden-mantled ground squirrel (Callospermophilus lateralis) was hanging out in the rocks with Pikas near Rainbow Curve in Rocky Mountain National Park. There are plenty of least chipmunks (Tamias minimus) waiting to greet visitors on the Needles Highway like this one in Custer State Park. Here is another least chipmunk, this one lives in Yellowstone and runs around the boardwalk not far from geysers and hot springs in the Upper Geyser Basin.

A Pika (Ochotona princeps) seems to be shedding its winter coat in Rocky Mountain National Park near Rainbow Curve. This black-tailed prairie dog (Cynomys ludovicianus) lives in the large colony at Bear Lodge (Devils Tower) National Monument. This Uinta Ground Squirrel (Spermophilus armatus) is part of the colony that lives around the cabins at Mammoth Hot Springs.

We saw many pronghorn all through Wyoming, especially while driving across the state from Yellowstone to Laramie.
Bear looks straight at us from behind a tree Huge bear on hillside among white flowers Black bear wandering through grasses
A very large black bear (Ursus americanus) in Yellowstone, watching cars pass by. Seen close to the road near Antelope Creek south of Tower Fall. A very large bear in Yellowstone. I think it is also a black bear, although it's not so easy to tell, as it was very large. Is that a small hump behind the head, and is it's face more dish shaped, and are its hind legs shorter than its forelegs? The answers seem to be "no" and therefore I think it's a black bear, but I can't be certain that "no" is accurate. This bear was up on a slope observing the bear shown to its right, south of Tower Fall. A large black bear that is not at all black in color in Yellowstone. This bear was not too far from the road just a mile or so away from Floating Island Lake.
