Our flight approached Heathrow on a route that took us right over the center of London, and we saw Buckingham Palace out our window. As our flight from Hong Kong approached London, we had a good look at the Shard and the Thames. The flag of the United Kingdom flies over the Parliament in Westminster.

Looking across the Thames. The Gherkin (the pickle) is easy to see from London Tower. In the larger view you can see Bowyer Tower in the foreground to the left. We went in to gaze in admiration at the Crown Jewels, but of course no photograph is allowed inside.

The Bowyer Tower was damaged in a fire in the early 1840s, and when it was repaired and rebult in 1845, tower with gargoyles was used to give it an older medieval look. Even if this gargoyle only dates to the 1840s, it certainly looks creepy enough. Lion gargoyle in London Tower

A tower at one of the corners of the White Tower (the keep) in London Tower. You can tell you are in the United Kingdom when you see this flag flying over this landmark. We were lucky to get about twenty minutes of strong morning sunlight with blue skies before the clouds moved in. Here is a view of the White Tower.

The White Tower, the keep of London Tower. This dates back (parts of it do, at least) to the days of William the Conqueror in the 1070s. Another view of the White Tower. The only time London Tower was ever captured by hostile forces was during the peasant revolt of 1381. An advantage of visiting in early March was the lack of crowds of tourists (there were many tourists, but not crowds). Also, the trees had not yet put on their leaves.

The Salt Tower in London Tower. The Shard looms up over the White Tower. Many of the prisoners in the London Tower carved graffiti to pass the time. Here a Jesuit Priest named Henry Walpole (imprisoned here from 1593 to 1595, and tortured on the rack while in London Tower). He was executed (a martyr, killed for being a Catholic priest) in York in 1595.

The White Tower contains museums, including displays of armor. This suit of armor displayed in the White Tower belonged to King Henry VIII, one of the worst tyrants in English history. Here is another suit of armor displayed in the White Tower.

London Tower was for many years a sort of zoo, and to remember and honor the animals, statues of them decorate the area now. Here two Beefeaters (Yeomen Warders) have a conversation. The Yeomen Warders have guarded the Tower of London since the times of Henry VII (late 15th century). The Yeomen Warders have finished many years of service in the armed forces before they can get a post in the London Tower.

Here is one of the Ravens of the Tower. Charles the Second took a liking to the Ravens, and so Ravens have been kept in the Tower ever since. The London Tower is a Royal Palace, and the Crown Jewels are kept there, so there are armed guards and various weapons on hand. Here is one of the armed guards standing at his post in the London Tower.

We had a cozy and relatively inexpensive (for London, at least) room in Hammersmith. It was easy to take the Underground there from Heathrow. We used the Underground and our feet to get around London. Even though we were only in London for about 22 hours, we did have time to eat some chips (french fries) out of a newspaper. The newspaper was printed especially to be a food wrapping, and contained a philosophical essay.

In one of the many towers inside the Tower of London there was a helmet we could try on. It fit Arthur best. Here stands Jeri on one of the walls, and behind her you can see the Tower Bridge. We walked by Tower Bridge on our way back to our hotel to collect our baggage when were done at London Tower.
