Issues
I am a sympathetic critic of most governments and cultures. I note the flaws and shortcomings, the injustices and tyrannies, and I will point them out. But, I think in most cases people who serve in law enforcement, the military, and governments are well-intentioned. While I believe there are some criminals and rogues in the Chinese government, I know such people also exist in the American government or local governments of both societies. China and its government is neither bad nor good. There are actions taken by the Chinese government that are wrong or even evil, and it's important to note which actions these are and speak out with indignation against them. Yet as an American I am acutely aware of my own natio’s betrayals of its higher ideals. I freely criticize and discuss my own nation's wrong or evil actions. We, the common people, the public must control, direct, and restrain state power.

- I was a college student in 1989, and I had a good friends from China. The events of that spring in China made an impression on me. Evidence that there was indeed a crack-down (photos of the dead). In 2006 Frontline did a report on the historical significance of the event.
- I lived in Taiwan from 1990-1992 during the later stages of the transition from a military dictatorship to a democracy, and as an American my sympathies were naturally with this movement towards greater freedom and public participation in open and accountable governance. I lived there again from late 2013 through early 2015 and witnessed the Sunflower protest movement in the spring of 2014. Here is the blog of the Taiwan Democracy Movement.
