Page Sixteen. Stops along the way home.

We left Barcelona on July 23rd. I used frequent flier miles, and so my route took me to London for an eight-hour layover and then on to Montreal for a 20-hour layover. Here are some photographs from London and Montreal. I visited the Victoria and Albert Museum, the National Archives, and Kew Gardens while in London. In Montreal I walked around quite a bit, and also visited the Archeology and Montreal History Museum, as well as the Museum of Fine Arts.

This ivory casket was made in Cordoba or Cuenca sometime around 1000 to 1025. The silver mounts are likely to have been added in the 18th century. A casket made for a daughter of caliph Abdu'l Rahman III, probably carved in 962 or around that time. A second casket made for a daughter of Abdu'l-Rahman III, from the same time period.

These limestone leaves are from Spain, probably from the Madinat al-Zahra palace in the Cordoba area, and date back to the period of 936-976. These panels with Arabic inscriptions are from Spain or Morocco, and date to some time between 1150 and 1250. A silk fabric from the 14th century, probably from Granada. This may have been from the Alhambra.

I think this stained glass is from the 16th century, but I'm not sure. This looks like a 16th century stained glass angel. Older stained glass, perhaps 14th or 15th century?
Alcazar Alcazar Alcazar
Old Stained glass. Very old stained glass from the 13th century I think. Rather modern stained glass from the 20th century.

A tapestry showing the fates. The cafeteria at the Victoria and Albert Museum, this is where I ate my lunch, which you can see in the lower right corner of this square picture. The lights in the dining room where I had my lunch.

The Palm House at Kew Gardens. A fountain in Kew Gardens. I saw this bird in Kew Gardens.

These were for sale in Kew Gardens, but I thought them too heavy and difficult to carry home. A page from the Little Domesday Book. A page from the Great Domesday Book displayed at the National Archives in London.

A globe at the National Archives in London. A view from the Museum of Archelogy and Montreal History looking toward the Montreal Biosphere. Inside the "Mary, Queen of the World" Cathedral in Montreal. This was constructed between 1875 and 1894. It is the seat of the archdiocese of Montreal.

This abstract painting is clearly influenced by Kandinsky. I quite like it. The Wave, a painting by James Williamson Galloway. Stained glass in the Montreal Metro.

We've come to the end of the trip. I arrived home and rested, and then came to my office the next day to work.
