Page Five. Toledo and Cordoba

Our fourth day in Spain was mainly spent in Toledo. I woke up early and took a 45 minute walk around the city when very few people were out and only a few breakfast shops were open. After going back to the hotel for a shower and change of clothing and some breakfast, Jeri and I went to the various historic landmarks. Of course the highlight was the cathedral, but we also enjoyed some other smaller landmarks. In every Toledo tourist destination we visited no photography was allowed inside, so mainly we just have pictures of the old architecture and the exteriors of some buildings.

This is a view of our hotel in the morning. You can see the spire of the cathedral over the street to the right. Our room is the one with the open windows in the balcony. Jeri enjoyed inspecting some of the goods for sale in Toledo. As backpacking tavellers we haven't space for much, and anyway, what could we afford here? Toledo has many shops where anyone could buy swords, tiles, gold jewelry, or religious items such as these.

A view looking north as we decended down the slopes from Toledo toward the gates. Jeri and I really enjoyed getting to know old Toledo by walking around the streets. Even some shopkeepers seemed to recognize us as we passed by their shops for the fourth or fifth time. Church facade in Toledo.

This is the one part of the Toledo Cathedral where you may photograph something under the roof. We walked from our hotel to the train station. We took the long way across the main bridge to look back at Toledo and have this view. The sort of little scene one hopes to see in Spain. This is a little building next to the Toledo Train Station.
Tortillas at Bar Santos in Cordoba Cordoba Cathedral at Twilight Sunset and Cordoba Church
In Cordoba we had some tortillas (potato pie) and cheese here in Bar Santos, right near the mosque-cathedral. We walked around the streets of Cordoba in the evening. As the sunset's light faded away we returned to the Main Mosque and Cathedral, right near our hotel. We caught glimpses of what must have been a lovely sunset from the narrow streets of Cordoba..

The Next Day we visited saw the Great Mosque of Cordoba and went to Granada for the night.

Toledo and Cordoba had in common the narrow old streets and very ancient homes and public bulidings. Both cities go back to times of the Romans and even earlier. Cordoba has a color theme of white, while the colors in Toledo are the colors of tan and yellowish brown. Each city had its unique charms, and we would have gladly remained in either city for another day or (ideally) two.
