Nathan, Oliver, and Arthur arrive early in the morning at Camp Butler Cemetery on the Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend. |
This was our fifth year of going to the Camp Butler cemetery to put flags on graves. My Hadley ancestors all passed through Camp Butler in the 1860s. |
The irony of this sweet image intrigued me. Those are Confederate (rebel) soldier graves the girl (brownie) and boy (cub scout) are decorating with flags. |

This scene of flooding on Outer Park Road won't impress you unless you live around here, in which case you know there is a five meter deep drainage ditch with a (usually) small (often dry) creek between where Sebastian was standing when he took the photo and the car that is stranded flooded in the street beyond. |
This Leopard Slug is an immigrant from Europe, but now it's common on the coasts of North America and also here in Illinois. This one was crawling along our home's walkway. |
Here I am drinking water from the Wren Bridge Spring in Fayette County. The old Hadley family properties were a few miles north of here, and some of my third and fourth cousins told me our ancestors regularly came to this spring along the banks of the Kaskaskia River. The water certainly is good. A couple drove up and filled many jugs with it while we were having a lunch picnic. |

A blue damselfly. I guess it's a female Azure Bluet (Enallagma aspersum), but I'm no expert. |
A black-winged damselfly. |
A harvester on a tent. We call this a daddy-long-legs, and they are very common in summer woodlands of Illinois and Indiana. There are many species, all in the order Opiliones. |
|
We were in Saint Louis for the Fourth of July (to see the B-52 concert under the Arch and the fireworks afterwards). We saw people of all ages playing in the fountains in Kiener Plaza and the May Amphitheater. |
William Zorach's statue "the runner" seems to be fleeing the old Federal Courthouse and the Jefferson Expansion Memorial (the Arch) on July 4th in Saint Louis. |
Sebastian very much enjoyed the chocolate shake he bought here in Livingston, Illinois at the Twistee Treat building at Pink Elephant Antiques. |
|
Visiting with the Alred family in Rockwood, Tennessee. Sebastian and Garrison are standing in the upper right of the photograph, and Jacob is on the couch. | Amida, Garrison (in green), and Jacob (in red), are feeding ducks and geese. |
We went to the old time music jam sessions, and when they were ending up Sebastian took a place at this piano and Jacob played his guitar. |
|
Terry Alred talks to his grandmother. |
Amida Alred demonstrates her love of yellow foods, especially corn. |
Amida and her grandmother give each other a hug. |

The House of Representatives in the Tennessee State Capitol. |
The grave of Sarah Childress Polk and her husband, James K. Polk (who happened to be the 11th President of the United States). |
Playing in Roane County Park (in Watts Bar Lake). |

The Hadley-Ives family standing inside the Parthenon in Nashville, Tennessee. The larger image shows all of the Athena statue. |
Looking up at the statue of Athena in the Nashville Parthenon. |
The Parthenon in Nashville, which was constructed for the 1897 International Exposition. |

Jeri at Angel Mounds in Indiana. |
A copper disk and other artifacts displayed in the Angel Mounds interpretive center. |

Arthur jumping into the little swimming pool at Jason's Canoe and Camping near Akers Ferry. |
Arthur was in charge of preparing some meals during the Current River camping trip. |
Here is Arthur on the Current River. |
|
The lovely waters of the Current River. | Sebastian and his friend Oliver shared a canoe for the second half of the float trip down the river. | Here is Arthur in the front of his canoe. |
|
Arthur enters Cave Spring Cave. | Sebastian, Oliver, Mike, and Arthur on their canoes. | Having fun on the Current River float trip. |
|
Arthur reaches for Sebastian. | Arthur and Sebastian struggle against the current as they wade in the Current River. | The boys enjoyed hanging in the current off this branch. Here Arthur is taking a turn in the swift stream. |
|
Looking out toward the entrance of Merritt Rock Cave (Little Gem Cave). | There were some nice formations inside Merritt Cave. Here is Sebastian in the cave by some of the formations. | Arthur went all the way to the back of the cave, wading through water that was chilled at about 15 degrees Celsius. Our feet were numb. |
