Taiwan is a land with significant heavy industry, chemical processing, and other intensive energy consuming production plants. Yet, it tries to maintain a clean environment and healthy agricultural sector as well. There are some flat plains and valleys in Taiwan, but most of the island’s area is made of hills or mountains. Some crops are covered with a fine mesh tent so that insect pests will be kept off the crops without the use of pesticides.

Temples such as the one in this photograph are frequent landmarks in the countryside. Arriving in the Chiayi High Speed Rail station after a 45 minute train ride, we then took a 45 minute bus ride from the station to Chiayi Park. From our bus window we saw the little communist noodle shop next to the Loving Hut vegan restaurant.

Twenty-two years ago when I first arrived in Chiayi (in 1990) there were many wooden structures like this one, but now (in 2012) such buildings are rare. The playground in Chiayi park across from Chun-Chih’s old childhood home has been decorted with a new paint scheme. Malaysian Night Herons such as this one are common in Chiayi Park.
